Neighbors helping each other

You can’t always choose your neighbors, but people who maintain good relationships with them usually appreciate it. An Austria-wide opinion survey of 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 69 shows this.

On average, Austrians are evenly divided in their enjoyment of their neighbors: just over a third (38%) are very happy with their neighborhood. Conversely, four out of ten people find some neighbors annoying. Only four percent of people are not satisfied with their neighbors. Nine percent either don’t know their neighbors well enough to form an opinion or have no contact with them at all. Upper Austrians are more satisfied with their neighbors, with 42% expressing contentment.

Openness and politeness

A good neighborhood benefits everyone involved. Neighbors can support each other and maintain social contacts. Many people appreciate it when you ask for help and when you do small favors for one another. Openness, curiosity, mindfulness, and politeness are key to good neighborliness. If you isolate yourself and avoid contact, you can’t expect much support in return.

Seeking solutions together

Wherever people gather, differing opinions and attitudes will emerge. Disputes often arise when different needs clash. If you need to address an issue, approach the conversation in a respectful and explanatory manner rather than being patronizing. Ideally, everyone involved should work together to find solutions where no one feels left out.

Important for well-being

Neighborhoods foster social relationships, which positively impact health, personal well-being, and life expectancy. A good relationship with neighbors fosters a sense of belonging, cohesion, and support. Whether it’s a chat over the garden fence, a helping hand, or a sympathetic ear, good neighborhoods make you feel comfortable and not alone.
